Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch: A Wider Framework for Cultural Engagement

This edition is organised through a strong partnership between IIT Madras and Banaras Hindu University, with support from several Union ministries and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Together, these institutions bring academic strength, cultural understanding and organisational expertise, helping the Sangamam expand into one of the country’s most influential cultural bridge-building events.
Over the years, the event has encouraged greater participation from scholars, educators, artists, young learners, community leaders and cultural practitioners. With every edition, the programme has opened more pathways for learning and collaboration, deepening bonds that span language, history and tradition.
Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch: Theme Focused on Tamil Learning Across India
The theme for 2025, “Learn Tamil – Tamil Karkalam”, places strong emphasis on promoting Tamil learning beyond the southern region. This theme reflects the event’s aim to encourage linguistic appreciation and create opportunities for people across India to connect with Tamil language and culture.
More than 1,400 delegates from Tamil Nadu are expected to participate this year. These participants represent a rich mix of groups students, teachers, writers, farmers, professionals, women’s groups and spiritual scholars. Their eight-day journey will take them through Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya, allowing them to experience northern India’s historical, cultural and spiritual landscapes.
Their schedule includes seminars, workshops, cultural performances and interactions that highlight traditional knowledge, crafts, cuisine and performing arts. The Sangamam functions not only as a cultural celebration but also as a platform for meaningful dialogue between communities.
Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch: Heritage Visits and Academic Interaction
One of the core strengths of the programme is its emphasis on heritage-based learning. Delegates will visit historically significant locations in Varanasi that share connections with Tamil culture. These include:
- The ancestral home of Subramania Bharati, the celebrated Tamil poet and freedom fighter
- Kedar Ghat, known for its deep spiritual and cultural associations
- Kasi Madam, a key site for Tamil pilgrims
- Kashi Vishwanath Temple, an iconic centre of India’s spiritual identity
- Mata Annapurna Temple, symbolising traditional hospitality and nourishment
These visits offer participants firsthand exposure to spaces where cultural memories, practices and historical links between the two regions have evolved over centuries.
In addition to heritage exploration, an important academic meet will be held at the Tamil Department of Banaras Hindu University. Here, scholars, researchers, linguists and students will discuss Tamil literature, shared histories, language preservation and cultural continuity. These interactions aim to strengthen institutional partnerships and foster long-term knowledge exchange.
Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch: Key Cultural and Educational Initiatives
The 2025 edition features several special initiatives that further highlight the depth of India’s shared heritage. One of the major highlights is the Sage Agasthya Vehicle Expedition, a symbolic journey from Tenkasi to Kashi. This expedition celebrates classical civilisational routes and the cultural influence of ancient southern kingdoms that historically connected different regions of India.

Under the Tamil Karkalam campaign, efforts to expand Tamil learning take centre stage. As part of this initiative:
- 50 Tamil teachers will conduct spoken Tamil classes in various schools across Varanasi
- 300 students from Kashi will travel to leading educational institutions in Tamil Nadu
- These students will participate in a 15-day Tamil learning programme, organised with the support of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai
Such programmes aim to make language learning more accessible and enjoyable while strengthening the emotional and cultural bond between young people from both regions.
This exchange is designed not only to promote language skills but also to build a deeper understanding of Tamil Nadu’s heritage, literature, folk traditions and social practices. By experiencing different linguistic and cultural environments, students gain a broader view of India’s diversity.
Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch: Creating Bridges Through Shared Experiences
Every edition of the Sangamam adds new experiences and expands the cultural dialogue between Tamil Nadu and Kashi. Personal interactions, shared meals, performances, temple visits, academic discussions and community events help participants form lasting impressions and connections.
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam Launch continues to serve as an important symbol of India’s unity one that celebrates differences, honours traditions and creates opportunities for deeper cultural integration. As the 2025 chapter begins on December 2, it brings renewed hope for stronger relationships, wider participation and a richer cultural exchange that benefits people across generations.
