What Is Aerobic Gymnastics?

Aerobic gymnastics is a competitive sport that combines energetic aerobic movements with gymnastics skills. Athletes perform routines that require strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and speed.

Performances are judged across different areas, including artistry, execution and difficulty. Gymnasts need to maintain control while completing complex movements within a short routine.

The sport is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, commonly known as FIG. Aerobic gymnastics is one of several gymnastics disciplines that are competed at international events.

India Gets a Major Gymnastics Milestone

Ariha’s victory is important for Indian gymnastics because it represents the country’s first senior gold medal in the individual women’s category at the Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships.

Indian gymnasts have competed across several disciplines, including artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics and aerobic gymnastics. However, the latest result gives greater attention to aerobic gymnastics and the athletes working to build a stronger presence for India in the sport.

The achievement also highlights the progress of athletes from the northeastern part of India. Ariha comes from Imphal, Manipur, a region with a strong sporting culture and a history of producing athletes who compete at national and international levels.

Strong Competition in Tagaytay City

The 2026 Asian Championships brought together athletes from 11 countries and featured more than 400 athletes and officials. The event in Tagaytay City provided an important platform for gymnasts from across Asia to compete at a high level.

The Philippines has hosted several international sporting events, and Tagaytay served as the setting for this year’s continental aerobic gymnastics competition.

Ariha’s performance stood out in a field that demanded both technical ability and artistic presentation. Her final score of 19.100 was enough to put her at the top and secure the historic gold medal for India.

Years of Work Behind the Gold

Ariha Pangambam trains under coach Yumnam Ranjan Singh, who has been part of her development as an international-level gymnast. Alongside her sporting career, she is also studying sports leadership at AISTS India.

Her journey has included several appearances at the Asian Championships. Finishing fourth in 2022 and again in 2024 meant she had already established herself as a competitive gymnast at the continental level.

The 2026 championship provided an opportunity to turn those earlier experiences into a podium finish. This time, Ariha went one step further and claimed the gold medal.

Growing Attention on Indian Gymnastics

Ariha Pangambam’s historic result comes at a time when Indian sport is seeing growing interest in disciplines beyond cricket and traditional Olympic events. Gymnastics has gradually attracted more attention as Indian athletes compete at major Asian and global competitions.

Results such as Ariha’s can also help increase awareness of aerobic gymnastics in India. The sport requires dedicated training facilities, experienced coaches and regular international competition, and strong performances can encourage greater interest among young athletes.

Her victory in Tagaytay gives Indian gymnastics another international milestone and puts Ariha Pangambam among the athletes who are helping the country build a stronger presence in aerobic gymnastics.
