How the BharatGen AI System Is Shaping India’s Multilingual Tech Future
India is taking a big step toward building its own strong and independent artificial intelligence setup through the BharatGen AI System, developed under the BharatGen Technology Foundation at IIT Bombay. This project focuses on creating a special Large Language Model (LLM) that can understand India’s many languages, cultures, accents, and writing styles. The aim is to build AI tools that truly represent the country’s diversity.

The BharatGen AI System was officially registered on 7 November 2025 at the Powai campus of IIT Bombay. This marks an important moment for the institution, as it moves beyond classroom learning and research to play a national role in advanced AI development.
The main goal is to build an Indian AI model that can work smoothly in more than 22 Indian languages, both in text and speech. It will support different regional accents, local words, and cultural ways of speaking, making the AI more natural and relatable for Indian users.
Strong Government Support and Funding
The government is giving large support to speed up the project.
- The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has given ₹235 crore.
- The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has added ₹1,058 crore under the IndiaAI Mission.
This funding helps BharatGen move quickly from early research to practical AI systems that can be used by industries, public services, and common people.
Collaboration With Top Institutions
BharatGen is not working alone. It is teaming up with a group of top academic institutions, including many leading IITs and IIITs.
The foundation plans to release simplified “distilled versions” of its AI models. These lighter models will help:
- Startups
- Researchers
- Companies
They will be able to use powerful AI without requiring huge computing resources. This step will open the AI ecosystem to more people and reduce technical barriers for innovation.

India’s Vision for a Sovereign AI Backbone

India’s long-term goal is to build a strong national AI system that supports local languages and cultural needs. BharatGen focuses on creating tools that can grow and adapt over time. With scalable and accessible technology, India hopes to help developers build applications that truly match the country’s linguistic richness.
The BharatGen AI System marks a major step toward an independent AI future, where technology is designed for India, by India, and aligned with the country’s unique diversity.
