Her club also achieved a major result by winning the 2026 European Women’s Chess Club Cup and defending its title. This meant the club secured the team championship while Humpy earned individual recognition for her performance.

Humpy is one of India’s leading chess players and has represented the country in major international competitions. Her latest achievement reflects her continued ability to perform at a high level in team events.

The success of both Indian players highlights the value of preparation, strategic thinking and concentration in competitive chess.

What Is the European Chess Club Cup?

The European Chess Club Cup is a team chess competition organised by the European Chess Union. It brings together chess clubs from different countries to compete in separate Open and Women’s events.

The 2026 competition took place in Budva, Montenegro, from 17 to 23 October. It featured six rounds, with players representing their clubs on designated boards.

Unlike individual chess tournaments, club competitions combine the results of several players to determine the team standings. Each game contributes to the club’s overall performance, while individual board awards recognise players who achieve strong results in their own matches.

The Open and Women’s events have separate team results and individual awards, allowing players to receive recognition even when their clubs do not win the overall team title.

How Chess Scoring Works

Chess tournaments generally award one point for a win, half a point for a draw and zero points for a loss.

Sarin’s four wins and two draws gave him five points from six games. Humpy’s total of 4.5 points also reflected her results across six games.

A board medal recognises an individual’s performance on a particular board during a team event. A team medal, on the other hand, depends on the combined results of the club’s players.

This distinction explains how Sarin could win individual gold while Novy Bor Chess Club finished second in the Open team standings.

India’s Growing Presence in International Chess

Indian players have achieved recognition in international chess across individual and team competitions. Results such as those earned by Sarin and Humpy show that Indian talent continues to compete successfully against players from different countries.

Club tournaments provide valuable opportunities to face unfamiliar opponents, test preparation and improve strategic skills. Players must manage their time carefully, plan several moves ahead and adjust their strategy when a game takes an unexpected turn.

These competitions also help clubs build stronger teams by bringing together players with different playing styles and levels of experience.

Budva Hosts the 2026 Competition

The tournament provided a platform for international players to compete at club level and represent their teams on the European stage. For Indian chess, the individual gold medals won by Nihal Sarin and Koneru Humpy were two of the notable achievements from the event.

Their performances demonstrate the importance of consistent results across multiple rounds and the role of individual contributions in team competitions.
