Diabetes in children mainly includes Type 1 diabetes and sometimes Type 2 diabetes. Children with diabetes often need regular blood sugar checks and insulin treatment. The new policy aims to improve early detection, treatment, and long-term care through public health services across India.
The guidelines connect healthcare services from community centres to district hospitals and medical colleges. This system helps children receive continuous treatment and medical support at every stage.
Key Features of Childhood Diabetes Guidelines 2026
The new framework introduces universal health screening for children through schools and community programmes. Public health facilities will provide free services, including:
- Blood sugar screening
- Diagnostic tests
- Lifelong insulin therapy
- Glucometers and test strips
- Follow-up care and counselling
The document also strengthens referral systems between primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare centres. This helps children with severe diabetes cases get advanced medical treatment quickly.

4Ts Awareness Framework for Early Detection
One important part of the guidelines is the “4Ts” awareness framework. These four warning signs help parents, teachers, and caregivers identify Type 1 diabetes early.
- Toilet – Frequent urination
- Thirsty – Increased thirst
- Tired – Constant tiredness
- Thinner – Sudden weight loss
The government believes early recognition can reduce complications and improve child health outcomes.
Family Training and Diabetes Management
The guidelines also focus on family education and caregiver training. Parents and caregivers will learn:
- Correct insulin administration
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Emergency response during low sugar levels
- Daily diabetes management for children
This support system is designed to improve long-term care and reduce health risks for children living with diabetes.
Childhood Diabetes and India’s Child Health System
India already runs several child health programmes related to nutrition, immunisation, and disease screening. The new Childhood Diabetes Guidelines 2026 add diabetes care to this larger public healthcare framework.
The policy aims to strengthen preventive healthcare and ensure affordable treatment for children across both urban and rural areas.
