Growth in Clean Energy Jobs

Clean energy jobs saw a 5% increase in 2023, outpacing fossil fuel job growth, which was limited to just 2%. This shift is driven by rising energy demand and significant investments in renewable energy, supporting the transition to more sustainable energy sources.

Overall Energy Investment

India’s total energy investment grew by 6% in 2023, with clean energy investments leading the charge. These investments rose by 35% compared to the 2016-2021 average, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable energy development.

Energy Sector Employment Breakdown

Fossil fuel supply accounted for over 3 million jobs in 2023, with coal supply alone providing 1.6 million positions. The oil and gas industry employed more than 800,000 workers, primarily in midstream and refining sectors.

Employment in Low-Emission Fuels

Low-emission fuels, including bioenergy, created nearly 700,000 jobs, with the bioethanol industry becoming the third-largest globally. The informal biofuel sector, especially in rural areas, also played a key role in employment generation.

Power Sector Employment

The power sector employed around 3 million people, with a balanced distribution between electricity generation and grid maintenance. This equilibrium is essential for ensuring the reliability and stability of India’s energy supply.
