The India Sustainable Tourism ITB Berlin initiative also highlights India’s commitment to responsible and inclusive tourism development. Under Vision 2047, the government is focusing on strengthening local participation in tourism while promoting eco-friendly practices across destinations. By encouraging sustainable infrastructure, protecting cultural heritage, and supporting community-based tourism, the India Sustainable Tourism ITB Berlin vision aims to ensure that tourism growth benefits both the economy and the environment for the long term.

Infrastructure Expansion and Connectivity
Improved connectivity has become a key pillar of India’s tourism growth strategy. Over the past decade, the number of operational airports in India has increased from 74 to more than 160, improving access to remote and emerging destinations.
Regional air travel has also expanded through the UDAN scheme, which aims to make flying affordable and accessible for smaller cities and towns. Enhanced rail connectivity is another major step, with modern trains like the Vande Bharat Express helping to create faster and more efficient tourism circuits across the country.
These improvements in transport infrastructure are expected to boost domestic tourism while making it easier for international travellers to explore multiple destinations within India.
Government Initiatives for Tourism Development
Several government initiatives are supporting the development of tourism infrastructure and destinations. One of the key programmes is Swadesh Darshan, which focuses on developing thematic tourism circuits across India.
Another important initiative is PRASHAD, which aims to rejuvenate and enhance pilgrimage and spiritual tourism destinations. These programmes are designed not only to improve tourism facilities but also to ensure that local communities benefit economically from tourism activities.
By investing in these initiatives, the government is working to create well-developed tourist circuits that showcase India’s diverse cultural, historical, and natural attractions.

India’s Role in Global Tourism Cooperation
At the summit held during ITB Berlin 2026, the minister reiterated India’s commitment to global cooperation in tourism development. India supports international efforts to promote tourism as a driver of resilience, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
By strengthening infrastructure, encouraging sustainable practices, and promoting community participation, India aims to position tourism as a key pillar of economic growth. At the same time, the country remains focused on protecting its unique cultural heritage and environmental resources for future generations.
Through initiatives aligned with Vision 2047, India is working to build a tourism sector that is not only globally competitive but also sustainable, inclusive, and beneficial for local communities.
