India-Vietnam BrahMos Deal Strengthens Defence Partnership
India and Vietnam moved closer on the proposed India-Vietnam BrahMos Deal during the state visit of Vietnamese President To Lam to India from 5 May to 7 May 2026. The visit took place at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and both countries upgraded their ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The India-Vietnam BrahMos Deal is currently in the advanced stage of discussions. Reports suggest that the agreement may be worth nearly 60 billion Indian rupees. The package is expected to include training and logistical support along with the missile system.
Vietnam is considered one of India’s important maritime partners in Southeast Asia. The possible deal is expected to improve defence cooperation and regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.
BrahMos Missile System and Its Features
BrahMos Aerospace developed the BrahMos missile jointly with support from India and Russia. It is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from land, sea, and air platforms.
The missile is known for its high speed of around Mach 2.8 to 3.0. BrahMos is already used by the Indian Armed Forces and is considered one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world.

Defence Cooperation Between India and Vietnam
Defence and security cooperation remain an important part of India-Vietnam relations. During the visit, both countries agreed to launch a new 2+2 ministerial dialogue involving the foreign and defence ministers of both nations.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held talks with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phan Van Giang in New Delhi on 6 May 2026. The discussions focused on joint military exercises, maritime security, information sharing, staff talks, and defence technology cooperation.
Both countries also discussed joint research and co-production in defence manufacturing.
Cooperation Beyond Defence
Apart from the India-Vietnam BrahMos Deal, the two countries signed several cooperation agreements on 6 May 2026. These agreements covered science and technology, healthcare, tourism, culture, finance, cybersecurity, and critical minerals.
The growing partnership shows that India and Vietnam are expanding cooperation in both strategic and economic sectors.
