The visit comes at a time when both countries are expanding their roles in global governance, technology development, and South-South cooperation. With rising geopolitical changes, the engagement highlights how India and Brazil see each other as trusted partners in shaping a more balanced global order.

India–Brazil Strategic Partnership and Shared Vision

India and Brazil have maintained a formal strategic partnership since 2006. This partnership is rooted in democratic traditions and a common belief in multilateralism. Both nations have often worked together on international platforms to promote fair representation for developing countries and to support reforms in global institutions.

As major economies of the Global South, India and Brazil have consistently coordinated their positions on climate action, sustainable development, and inclusive growth. President Lula’s visit is expected to reinforce this long-standing cooperation and align both nations more closely on future priorities.

Focus on Technology at the AI Impact Summit

A major highlight of the Lula India AI Summit Visit is President Lula’s participation in the second edition of the AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 19–20. His presence underlines the importance Brazil places on emerging technologies and digital transformation. The summit will focus on artificial intelligence, innovation ecosystems, and the use of technology for inclusive development.

India’s experience with digital public infrastructure and Brazil’s growing technology sector offer strong opportunities for collaboration. Discussions are expected to explore how artificial intelligence can support public services, improve governance, and drive economic growth while ensuring ethical and inclusive use of technology.

High-Level Talks Between Modi and Lula

A bilateral summit between Prime Minister Modi and President Lula is scheduled for February 21. During this meeting, the two leaders will review the entire range of India–Brazil relations. Key areas include trade, defence, energy, agriculture, health, science, and technology.

Global challenges will also be on the agenda. Issues such as reforming multilateral institutions, addressing climate change, counter-terrorism, and strengthening cooperation in international forums are expected to be discussed. Prime Minister Modi is set to host a luncheon in honour of the visiting Brazilian leader, symbolising the warmth of bilateral ties.

Ceremonial Engagements and Diplomatic Outreach

As part of the state visit, President Lula will meet Droupadi Murmu, who will host a formal state banquet. Senior Indian leaders, including the Vice President and the External Affairs Minister, are also scheduled to call on him. These engagements highlight the importance India places on its relationship with Brazil.

Such high-level interactions help deepen mutual understanding and create space for closer coordination across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

Economic Cooperation and Business Engagement

Economic ties form a key pillar of the Lula India AI Summit Visit. President Lula is accompanied by around 14 Brazilian ministers and a large business delegation. Ministerial-level meetings and a dedicated business forum will focus on expanding trade, investment, and industrial cooperation.

Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Despite steady growth, both sides believe there is significant untapped potential. Sectors such as renewable energy, defence manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, and critical minerals are expected to receive special attention. Stronger economic ties can help diversify supply chains and support sustainable development goals in both countries.

Role in Global Forums and South-South Cooperation

India and Brazil work closely in major international groupings such as BRICS, G20, and the IBSA Dialogue Forum. Through these platforms, both nations advocate for the interests of developing countries and push for reforms in global financial and political institutions.

The visit follows sustained high-level engagement between the two leaders, including recent meetings at G20 summits and a state visit by Prime Minister Modi to Brazil in 2025. Together, India and Brazil project themselves as leading voices of the Global South, committed to a more inclusive and representative global system.
