Mount Vinson is known as one of the most remote and challenging mountains in the world. Climbers face extreme isolation, sub-zero temperatures, and highly unpredictable weather. Kavita’s successful ascent shows her careful planning, physical strength, and determination. In Antarctica, rescue options are limited, and conditions can change suddenly, making her achievement even more remarkable. Her success has been celebrated widely in India, especially in Uttarakhand, where she comes from.
Journey and Team Support
Kavita’s expedition started on December 3, when she left India. She arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile, on December 4, and then flew to Union Glacier on December 7. From there, she was transported to Vinson Base Camp at around 2,100 metres by a ski-equipped aircraft. The climb was guided by the experienced high-altitude mountaineer Mingma David Sherpa. She was supported by Indian mountaineer Bharath Thammineni and his expedition team. A total of nine Indian climbers successfully completed the summit push after carefully following acclimatisation schedules to adjust to high altitude conditions.

Climbing Mount Vinson is a major step for Kavita towards completing the Seven Summits challenge. She had previously climbed Mount Elbrus in Europe. At the Antarctic summit, she proudly raised the Indian flag and called the moment deeply emotional and a matter of national pride.
