DRDO Unveils New Man-Portable Underwater Vehicles

India boosts coastal security as DRDO introduces New Man-Portable Underwater Vehicles designed for rapid mine detection and autonomous underwater surveillance.

India has enhanced its undersea surveillance capabilities with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) introducing a new generation of man-portable autonomous underwater vehicles (MP-AUVs). These vehicles are designed to support rapid mine detection and strengthen naval preparedness along critical coastal regions.

Key Features of the MP-AUV System

The newly developed underwater vehicles operate autonomously and are equipped with side-scan sonar and underwater cameras, enabling real-time identification of mine-like threats during maritime operations. Their compact and lightweight design allows deployment from small vessels, offering flexibility for diverse naval missions.

Advanced Recognition Technologies

A major technological advancement in these underwater vehicles is the use of deep-learning-based algorithms. These algorithms automatically classify underwater objects, reducing operator workload and improving operational efficiency. The system also ensures consistent and accurate data collection during high-risk naval operations.

Role of DRDO’s NSTL

The project has been executed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, which specialises in naval systems and underwater technologies. NSTL has previously developed several platforms contributing to India’s maritime defence capabilities, and the MP-AUV system further strengthens the country’s strategic edge under the sea.

Quick Facts

  • MP-AUVs developed by DRDO’s NSTL, Visakhapatnam.
  • Equipped with side-scan sonar and underwater cameras for real-time detection.
  • Deep-learning algorithms allow autonomous target recognition.
  • Main objective: rapid identification of mine-like objects in maritime zones.
