Type 076 Sichuan: China’s First Amphibious Ship with Electromagnetic Catapults

China begins sea trials of its First Amphibious Ship, Type 076 Sichuan, featuring electromagnetic catapults and advanced UAV operations.

China has begun sea trials of the Type 076 amphibious assault ship “Sichuan”, marking a major leap in its naval modernisation efforts. The vessel combines features of a traditional amphibious assault platform with capabilities of a light aircraft carrier, reflecting Beijing’s goal to enhance long-range maritime operations.

Launch of a Next-Generation Amphibious Ship

Bearing hull number 51, the Sichuan departed Shanghai’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard for maiden sea trials after months of dockside testing. Initial evaluations are focusing on propulsion systems, power generation, and onboard electrical networks. The induction of this ship follows the recent commissioning of China’s aircraft carrier Fujian, highlighting an accelerated naval modernisation drive.

Advanced Features and Upgrades

The Type 076 represents a major evolution from the earlier Type 075 class. Its displacement exceeds 40,000 tonnes, with a flight deck measuring approximately 260 metres long and 52 metres wide, making it larger than many global amphibious vessels. A key innovation is the integration of electromagnetic catapults, allowing it to launch fixed-wing aircraft—a first for an amphibious assault ship. The dual-island superstructure, enlarged hangar, and advanced aviation control systems enhance operational flexibility.

Integration of Unmanned Systems

China has designed the Type 076 to serve as a hub for unmanned aviation, supporting UAVs such as the GJ-11 stealth drone, alongside helicopters and potential crewed aircraft. The ship’s design reflects China’s growing investment in drones and heavy unmanned systems, expanding its expeditionary reach in contested maritime zones.

Strategic Implications for India and the Indo-Pacific

The Type 076’s capabilities have direct implications for the Indian Ocean Region. Its ability to deploy amphibious troops, drones, and landing craft increases China’s operational flexibility near strategic areas like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With electromagnetic launch systems and advanced aviation infrastructure, the vessel narrows the technological gap with other global carrier powers, impacting long-term naval planning for India and regional security strategies.
