Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Pratap Joins Indian Coast Guard Fleet
Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel has officially joined the Indian Coast Guard, marking a new chapter in India’s efforts to protect its seas and coastline. The vessel was handed over during a formal ceremony at Goa Shipyard Limited, a key defence shipbuilder in the country. This induction reflects India’s growing focus on keeping its marine environment clean while also strengthening maritime safety and security.

Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel is designed to meet this need by offering modern technology, strong operational ability, and an indigenous foundation.
Built in India With a Strong Local Focus
Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel is the first pollution control ship for the Indian Coast Guard that has been fully designed and built in India. Goa Shipyard Limited constructed the vessel with more than 60 percent local components and systems. This achievement highlights India’s push to build advanced maritime platforms within the country and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
The indigenous design allows better control over maintenance, upgrades, and long-term use. It also supports Indian industries and skilled workers involved in shipbuilding and marine technology. By adding this vessel to its fleet, the Coast Guard has taken a strong step toward self-reliance while improving its ability to respond quickly to pollution incidents at sea.
Modern Systems for Multiple Roles at Sea

Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel is not limited to environmental duties alone. It is equipped with modern onboard systems that allow it to handle a wide range of tasks. The ship carries a 30 mm gun and two remotely operated guns, all linked with advanced control systems. These features help the vessel support law enforcement duties, coastal surveillance, and maritime security operations when needed.
Along with these systems, the vessel includes Indian-made mission equipment designed to improve reliability and reduce dependence on imported technology. This combination of safety, security, and environmental tools makes the ship a flexible asset for the Indian Coast Guard in both routine and emergency situations.
Designed for Effective Pollution Response
One of the most important features of Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel is its ability to deal with marine pollution efficiently. It is the first Coast Guard vessel of its kind to include a retractable stern thruster and a Dynamic Positioning System. These systems allow the ship to hold its position accurately, even in rough sea conditions.
The vessel also has flush-type side sweeping arms that help in collecting oil spills and other pollutants from the water surface. Special pollution response equipment onboard allows quick containment and recovery during emergencies. A dedicated pollution response boat, supported by a davit system, can be launched swiftly to reach affected areas that the main vessel cannot access easily.
High-capacity external firefighting systems further enhance the ship’s ability to handle accidents involving fires or hazardous materials at sea.
Supporting Safer and Cleaner Indian Seas
Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel will play a vital role in protecting India’s vast maritime zones. It will help enforce pollution control rules, support rescue operations, and assist during natural or man-made disasters. The vessel strengthens the Coast Guard’s presence across the Exclusive Economic Zone, ensuring faster response times and better coordination during emergencies.
By combining pollution response, safety, and security roles into a single platform, the vessel improves overall maritime governance. Its induction reflects India’s commitment to balancing economic activity at sea with environmental responsibility.
As coastal and offshore activities continue to grow, Samudra Pratap Pollution Control Vessel stands as a symbol of India’s determination to safeguard its oceans, protect marine life, and maintain clean and secure waters for future generations.
