Recurve Archery Gold for India

Recurve Archery brings India its first women’s team gold at the Asian Games after a 5-3 win over South Korea.

Recurve Archery gave India a historic gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 2, 2026, as Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod defeated South Korea 5-3 in the women’s team final. The victory was India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team event and ended South Korea’s long run of dominance in the competition.

Recurve Archery Team Makes History

The Indian trio entered the final against a strong South Korean team featuring Lee Yun-ji, Kang Chae-young and Oh Ye-jin. South Korea had won every women’s team recurve gold at the Asian Games since 1998, making the final a major challenge for India.

India had also never reached the final of the women’s team recurve event at the Asian Games before 2026. The win therefore marked a major breakthrough for Indian archery at the continental level.

The Indian team stayed calm despite difficult windy conditions at the venue in Okazaki. The archers relied on consistent shooting and strong coordination to keep the match close before taking control in the later stages.

India Takes Control in the Third Set

The opening two sets were closely contested. Both teams finished with identical scores, leaving the match tied at 2-2 in set points.

The third set became the turning point. India produced a score of 55, while South Korea scored 51. This gave India two set points and moved the Indian team ahead 4-2.

The fourth set remained tense until the final arrows. South Korea finished strongly, but India responded with scores of 9, 9 and 10 with its final three arrows. The Korean team ended its final sequence with 8, 9 and 9. The set was tied, giving India the additional point needed to win the match 5-3.

Kumkum Mohod Delivers Under Pressure

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod was one of the key figures in the historic victory. Competing in her first Asian Games, she handled the pressure of facing one of the world’s strongest recurve teams.

Her final arrow helped India close out the match. Mohod hit a 10 during the decisive stage, while the Korean team could not produce a higher score in its final sequence.

Her performance was part of a breakthrough Asian Games campaign. Mohod later went on to win individual recurve gold as well, becoming a major name in India’s successful archery campaign at Aichi-Nagoya.

Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma Add Experience

Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma provided experience alongside the young Mohod. Bhakat had already competed at major international events, while Sharma contributed to the team’s strong performance throughout the tournament.

The combination of experience and youth proved valuable against South Korea. The Indian archers did not allow the reputation of their opponents to affect their approach and stayed focused on each set.

Kirti Sharma later said the team relied on mental composure and followed the process developed during training to handle the pressure of the final.

India Defeated China in the Semifinal

India’s route to the final included another strong performance against China. The Indian team defeated China 5-1 in the semifinal to secure its place in the gold-medal match.

That result gave the team confidence before facing South Korea. The final was considerably closer, but India’s ability to respond during the important third and fourth sets ultimately delivered the gold.

South Korea’s Long Recurve Streak Ends

The victory brought an end to South Korea’s remarkable dominance in the women’s team recurve event at the Asian Games. South Korea had won seven consecutive gold medals from 1998 through 2022, with the 2022 edition held in Hangzhou in 2023.

South Korea’s team had also won multiple Olympic titles and remained one of the strongest forces in international recurve archery. India’s 5-3 victory therefore became one of the most notable results of the archery competition at Aichi-Nagoya.

The result also showed how competitive the women’s recurve field has become, with Indian archers increasingly challenging established international powers.

A Successful Archery Campaign for India

The women’s team gold was part of a highly successful archery campaign for India at the 2026 Asian Games. Indian archers won nine medals across the competition, including five gold medals, according to the final competition results.

The campaign included strong performances in both recurve and compound events. The success also highlighted the depth of India’s current archery programme, with established athletes competing alongside younger archers such as Mohod.

India’s Strong Finish at Aichi-Nagoya

The women’s recurve gold came during one of India’s strongest stretches of the Aichi-Nagoya Games. On October 2, India collected six gold medals across several sports, including boxing, archery, wrestling and hockey.

India eventually finished the Asian Games with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, and placed fourth in the overall medal standings. The Games concluded on October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya.

The women’s recurve team gold stands out among those results because it was India’s first gold in the event and ended one of the longest winning streaks in Asian Games archery.
