Women’s Hockey Gold for India

Women’s Hockey Gold returns to India after 44 years as India beats China 1-0 and qualifies for LA 2028.

Women’s Hockey Gold returned to India at the Asian Games 2026 after a 44-year wait. India defeated defending champions China 1-0 in the final on October 2 in Japan to win the women’s hockey title for the second time in Asian Games history. Lalremsiami scored the only goal of the match, while goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a crucial penalty-stroke save to protect India’s narrow lead.

India Ends a 44-Year Wait

India’s first Asian Games women’s hockey gold came in 1982. Since then, the team had reached the final twice but could not reclaim the title. India finished with silver medals in 1998 and 2018, making the 2026 victory an important moment for the team.

The latest gold came against a strong Chinese side that entered the final as the defending Asian Games champion. India had to remain organised throughout the match and protect its early advantage until the final whistle.

The result also gave India its second Asian Games gold medal in women’s hockey, with the previous title coming 44 years earlier.

Lalremsiami Scores the Decisive Goal

The final remained closely contested in the early stages, with both teams looking for an opening. India eventually broke the deadlock in the 10th minute.

Lalremsiami produced the decisive moment with a powerful reverse-stick strike to put India 1-0 ahead. The goal was especially memorable because she was making her 200th senior international appearance for India during the final.

China continued to put pressure on India after falling behind, but the Indian defence stayed compact and prevented the defending champions from finding an equaliser.

Savita Punia Makes a Crucial Save

Goalkeeper Savita Punia played a major role in keeping India ahead. China earned a penalty stroke during the match, giving the defending champions an important chance to level the score.

Savita stopped the penalty stroke, denying China one of its best opportunities of the final. Her save helped India maintain its 1-0 advantage as the match moved towards the final stages.

The experienced goalkeeper has been one of the central figures in Indian women’s hockey for many years. During the 2026 Asian Games, she also became the most-capped player in the history of Indian women’s hockey, surpassing Vandana Katariya’s previous record.

India Reaches the Final After Beating South Korea

India’s road to the gold-medal match included a strong semifinal against South Korea. India defeated Korea 2-0 on September 30 to secure its place in the final.

The Indian team had to work through a difficult first half, with the Korean defence and goalkeeper keeping the score level. India eventually broke through in the third quarter when Ishika scored. Captain Salima Tete then added a second goal in the final quarter to complete the 2-0 victory.

That win set up the final against China, which had defeated Japan in a shootout in the other semifinal.

Strong 2026 Season Continues

The Women’s Hockey Gold came after a strong year for the Indian team. Before the Asian Games, India produced its best finish at the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup in more than five decades, finishing fifth.

The team also won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in Auckland earlier in the year. That victory earned India promotion to the FIH Women’s Pro League for the following season.

These results gave the team confidence before arriving in Japan. Under head coach Sjoerd Marijne and captain Salima Tete, India entered the Asian Games with a clear target of winning gold and securing a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Asian Games Gold Secures LA 2028 Qualification

India’s victory also had an important effect beyond the Asian Games medal table. The women’s hockey gold secured India a direct qualification place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Under the qualification system, the highest-placed eligible team in the women’s hockey competition at the 2026 Asian Games earned an Olympic quota, provided it had not already qualified through another route. India’s gold therefore secured its place at the next Summer Olympics.

This gives the Indian team additional preparation time for the Los Angeles Olympic cycle and allows the players and coaching staff to plan their next phase of international competition.

A Historic Day for Indian Hockey

The women’s hockey victory was part of an exceptional day for Indian sport at Aichi-Nagoya. India won six gold medals on October 2 across boxing, wrestling, archery and hockey.

The result also created a special moment for Indian hockey because the women’s team won gold on October 2, followed the next day by the men’s team retaining its Asian Games title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia. This meant India won both men’s and women’s hockey gold medals at the same edition of the Asian Games for the first time.

For the women’s team, however, the 1-0 victory over China will be remembered for ending a 44-year wait, Lalremsiami’s milestone goal, Savita’s crucial save and the return of India to the top of the Asian Games women’s hockey podium.
