Rishabh Das Breaks His Own Record

Das entered the 200m backstroke final after finishing fourth in his heat. He then produced an even faster performance in the final, becoming the first Indian swimmer to record a time below 1:59 in the long-course 200m backstroke.

His new time of 1:58.77 was more than one second faster than his earlier national record of 1:59.84. The latest performance shows how quickly the young swimmer has progressed over the past two seasons.

Although the national record did not result in a medal, the performance was one of the notable moments for India’s swimming team during the Asian Games. Japan’s Kodai Nishiono won the gold medal in 1:56.42, South Korea’s Lee Ju-ho took silver in 1:56.58 and China’s Xu Jiayu won bronze in 1:56.73.

From Srihari Nataraj’s Record to a New National Mark

Rishabh Das first entered the national record books in June 2025 at the 78th Senior National Aquatic Championships in Bhubaneswar. He won the men’s 200m backstroke in 2:00.65, breaking the earlier Indian national record of 2:02.29 set by Srihari Nataraj.

His progress continued in 2026. In March, Das improved his time to 2:00.14 at the NSW State Open Championships in Sydney. Two months later, he made another major improvement at the Sydney Open Meet.

In May 2026, Das clocked 1:59.84, becoming the first Indian swimmer to go under two minutes in the long-course 200m backstroke. His latest Asian Games performance has now pushed the national record further down to 1:58.77.

A Young Swimmer Making Rapid Progress

At 19, Das has already become an important name in India’s backstroke programme. His national record progression shows a steady improvement rather than a single breakthrough performance.

World Aquatics lists his 200m backstroke national record at 1:59.90 from the 2026 Senior National Aquatic Championships in June, while the Asian Games result subsequently lowered the mark to 1:58.77. Its athlete profile also records his gold-medal performance at the 79th Senior National Aquatics Championships.

The Asian Games final provided Das with an opportunity to test himself against some of Asia’s leading backstroke swimmers. He finished sixth, while fellow Indian swimmer Utkarsh Patil finished seventh with a time of 2:00.94.

What Is the 200m Backstroke?

The 200m backstroke is a long-course swimming event held in a 50-metre pool. Swimmers cover four lengths of the pool while using the backstroke technique.

Unlike freestyle and several other swimming events, competitors start the race in the water while holding the starting grips. They remain on their backs while swimming, apart from the permitted movement involved during turns.

The event requires a combination of speed, endurance, efficient turns and strong underwater movement. Because the race covers 200 metres, swimmers need to maintain their pace across all four lengths rather than relying only on a fast start.

India’s Swimming Campaign in Aichi-Nagoya

Das’s national record came during a competitive day for India’s swimmers at the Asian Games. India had two swimmers in the men’s 200m backstroke final, with Das finishing sixth and Patil seventh.

Sajan Prakash also competed in the men’s 200m butterfly final and finished seventh with a time of 1:58.42. India did not win a swimming medal on the day, but Das’s national record provided a significant individual performance.

The result also adds to the recent improvement in Indian swimming times. Das had already broken the 200m backstroke record several times since 2025, and his Asian Games performance has now taken the national mark below 1:59.

A Record Built Over Two Seasons

Das’s record journey has moved from 2:00.65 in 2025 to 2:00.14, then 1:59.84 and finally 1:58.77 in 2026. Each improvement has come through international or national-level competition.

The latest record is also notable because it came on the Asian Games stage against a strong field. While Japan’s Nishiono, South Korea’s Lee and China’s Xu occupied the medal positions, Das produced his fastest-ever 200m backstroke performance to finish sixth.

With the Aichi-Nagoya Games providing another international racing experience, Das’s 1:58.77 performance has added a new mark to India’s men’s 200m backstroke record book.
