Taranjit Singh Sandhu is a seasoned officer of the Indian Foreign Service and brings more than three decades of diplomatic experience to his new constitutional role in the national capital.

A Distinguished Career in the Indian Foreign Service

Taranjit Singh Sandhu belongs to the 1988 batch of the Indian Foreign Service and has served in several key diplomatic roles throughout his career. Over the years, he worked in important Indian missions abroad and held significant responsibilities within the Ministry of External Affairs.

One of his most notable assignments was serving as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024. During this time, he represented India in Washington and helped strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Before that, Sandhu served as India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and also worked as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC. His work consistently focused on improving diplomatic, economic, and strategic cooperation with key international partners.

Contribution to India–US Strategic Partnership

During his tenure in Washington, Sandhu played a crucial role in advancing the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. His time as ambassador coincided with a period of growing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as defence, technology, trade, and Indo-Pacific security.

Sandhu worked closely with policymakers and institutions in both nations to expand defence technology collaboration, improve supply chain cooperation, and strengthen engagement with the Indian diaspora in the United States.

His diplomatic efforts were considered important in deepening bilateral ties at a time when both countries were increasing strategic cooperation on global and regional issues.

Appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi

Following his retirement from diplomatic service, Taranjit Singh Sandhu has now been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The Lieutenant Governor serves as the constitutional head of the National Capital Territory and acts as the representative of the President of India.

The role involves important administrative responsibilities, particularly in areas such as public order, land management, and coordination between the central government and the Delhi government.
