Women’s Asia Cup: India Win Eighth Title
Women’s Asia Cup champions India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the 2026 final in Dubai, securing a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title. India produced a strong performance with both bat and ball to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament. The victory also gave India an opportunity to respond to their defeat against Sri Lanka in the 2024 final.
India Post a Strong Total
India won the toss and built a strong batting performance, scoring 183 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
The foundation of the innings came from openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, who produced a record-breaking 129-run partnership. The pair attacked the Sri Lankan bowling early and gave India a strong platform.
Their partnership allowed India to maintain a high scoring rate through the opening stages of the innings. Once the opening pair was separated, the middle order continued the momentum and helped India reach a challenging total of 183.
Shafali Verma’s contribution was particularly important, and her performance earned her the Player of the Match award.

Sri Lanka Struggle in the Chase
Sri Lanka needed 184 runs to win the Women’s Asia Cup final but struggled to build partnerships during their chase.
India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings and regularly took wickets. Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 111 in 19.4 overs, giving India a 72-run victory.
The Indian bowling attack was led by Shree Charani, who claimed four wickets. Deepti Sharma also played a major role by taking three wickets.
The pair disrupted Sri Lanka’s batting order and prevented the defending side from building the partnerships required to stay in the contest.
India’s All-Round Performance
The Women’s Asia Cup final highlighted India’s strength in both departments. The opening partnership provided the foundation with the bat, while the bowlers maintained control during Sri Lanka’s chase.
India’s fielding and bowling also helped prevent Sri Lanka from recovering after losing early wickets.
The 72-run margin reflected India’s control over the match. Sri Lanka were unable to match India’s scoring rate and eventually ran out of opportunities as the innings progressed.
Record Eighth Asia Cup Title
The victory gave India their eighth Women’s Asia Cup title, extending their record in the continental tournament.
India have remained one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket in Asia since the competition began. Their latest title adds to a long period of success in the tournament.
The result also marked India’s sixth victory over Sri Lanka in an Asia Cup final across the ODI and T20 formats. Their earlier final victories include the 2004 edition, when India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in the two-team tournament.
India Avenge 2024 Final Defeat
The 2026 final also carried added significance because Sri Lanka had defeated India in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final.
India’s latest victory reversed that result and allowed the team to regain the continental title.
The win in Dubai also came as India completed an unbeaten campaign, showing consistency across the tournament rather than relying on a single strong performance in the final.
Leaders Congratulate Team India
The victory received congratulations from India’s top constitutional and political leaders.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team and praised their teamwork throughout the tournament. She highlighted the team’s unbeaten run and said the players had made the country proud.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the team, praising the players’ confidence, consistency and fighting spirit. He said the achievement could encourage more young people across the country to take up sport.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan congratulated the team on winning the Women’s T20 Asia Cup for a record eighth time. He highlighted the team’s teamwork and determination during the unbeaten campaign.
Lok Sabha Speaker Praises Team
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team.
He praised the players for remaining unbeaten and highlighted their talent and determination throughout the tournament. He said the team’s achievement could encourage young people to set ambitious goals and work towards them.
The messages from senior leaders reflected the wider recognition of India’s performance in the continental tournament.
Shafali and Mandhana Set the Platform
The partnership between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana was one of the biggest moments of the final.

Their 129-run opening stand gave India early control and allowed the team to score quickly without losing wickets during the crucial opening period.
The pair’s performance also demonstrated the importance of a strong start in a T20 final, where scoring pressure can quickly change the course of a match.
India’s bowlers then completed the job by keeping Sri Lanka under pressure throughout the chase.
India Look Ahead After Asia Cup Success
The Women’s Asia Cup victory adds another major title to India’s recent women’s cricket achievements. The team completed the tournament without a defeat and showed strong performances across batting and bowling.
With the 2026 continental championship secured, India’s attention will now move towards upcoming international cricket assignments, as the women’s game continues to grow across Asia and competition between leading teams becomes stronger.
The combination of experienced players such as Mandhana and Deepti Sharma with younger talents such as Shafali Verma and Shree Charani gives India a strong mix as the team moves into the next phase of the international season.
