Women’s Champions Trophy Comes to India
Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 will be hosted by India after the International Cricket Council (ICC) selected the country to stage the inaugural edition of the tournament. The competition is scheduled to take place from February 14 to February 28, 2027, bringing six of the world’s leading women’s cricket teams together for a new ICC event.
The tournament will be played in the T20 International format and will feature a round-robin league followed by a final. India’s selection as host adds another major international women’s cricket event to the country’s growing cricket calendar and is expected to give further attention to women’s cricket.
Women’s Champions Trophy 2027
The Women’s Champions Trophy will feature six teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The teams will compete against each other in the league stage, with the top two sides moving into the final.
The final is scheduled for February 28, 2027. Unlike larger ICC tournaments involving more teams, the inaugural Champions Trophy will use a compact six-team format. This will create a short and competitive tournament in which every league match can have a major impact on the final standings.
The event is being introduced as a new addition to the ICC women’s cricket calendar and will provide another opportunity for leading teams to compete for an international title.

India Replaces Sri Lanka as Host
India was selected after Sri Lanka was removed from consideration as the original host. The change followed concerns over governance and alleged government involvement in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The ICC considered several countries as possible replacement hosts, including Bangladesh, India and South Africa. After reviewing the available options under its host evaluation process, the international cricket body selected India.
The decision gives India responsibility for organising the first edition of the new tournament and comes as the country continues to host several major international cricket competitions.
Tournament Venues
The Women’s Champions Trophy will be played at two confirmed venues in India. These are the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.
Mumbai has a long history of international cricket and is one of India’s major cricket centres. Vadodara also has an established cricketing tradition and has hosted domestic and international women’s cricket matches.
Using two venues will allow the tournament to maintain a focused schedule while reducing the amount of travel required for the participating teams.
How Teams Qualified
The six participating teams were selected using the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings following the 2026 T20 World Cup. The ranking position on July 6, 2026, was used as the cut-off for determining the teams.
This system means that the tournament will bring together several of the strongest women’s T20 teams. Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka have all established themselves as important sides in international women’s cricket.
The ranking-based qualification also makes the tournament highly competitive from its opening match, with every participating team bringing significant experience in the T20 format.
Growing Importance of Women’s Cricket
The creation of the Women’s Champions Trophy comes during a period of rapid growth in women’s cricket. International women’s T20 cricket has expanded significantly in recent years, supported by domestic leagues, increased broadcast coverage and greater investment in women’s teams.
Major competitions such as the Women’s T20 World Cup have helped build a global audience for the women’s game. Domestic tournaments, including franchise-based leagues, have also provided players with more opportunities to compete at a high level.
A new ICC tournament gives international players another opportunity to play against top-ranked teams and compete for a major trophy.
T20 Format Brings a Fast Competition
The Women’s Champions Trophy will be played entirely in the T20 International format. Each team will have 20 overs to bat, making matches shorter than traditional One-Day International cricket.
The T20 format places strong importance on quick scoring, effective bowling in the final overs and sharp fielding. Because there are fewer overs, a small change in momentum can quickly influence the result of a match.
For fans, the format also offers a compact tournament with several high-profile matches taking place over just two weeks.

India’s Role in the 2027 Tournament
For India, hosting the Women’s Champions Trophy will provide an opportunity to showcase its cricket infrastructure and support the continued growth of women’s cricket.
The Indian women’s team will enter the tournament as one of the six participating sides and will have the advantage of playing on home grounds. However, the presence of strong teams such as Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa is expected to make the competition highly challenging.
With the tournament scheduled for February 2027, teams will have several months to prepare for the new ICC competition. The event will add another important international tournament to the women’s cricket calendar and create a new title for teams to compete for.
