AI Weather Forecasting IMD Improves Monsoon Prediction

AI Weather Forecasting IMD launches advanced AI systems for accurate monsoon rainfall prediction in rain-fed regions.

AI Weather Forecasting IMD has launched two new Artificial Intelligence-based weather forecasting systems to improve rainfall prediction in rain-fed farming regions. These advanced systems will help farmers, disaster management teams, and water resource planners make better decisions during the monsoon season.

AI Weather Forecasting IMD for Rainfall Prediction

The first AI-based forecasting product was developed by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) for Uttar Pradesh. This system provides rainfall forecasts with a high spatial resolution of 1 kilometre.

The technology uses information collected from Automatic Rain Gauges, Automatic Weather Stations, satellites, and Doppler weather radars. With the help of Artificial Intelligence, the system can provide rainfall forecasts up to 10 days in advance.

This will help farmers plan sowing, irrigation, crop protection, and harvesting more accurately.

District-Level Monsoon Monitoring System

The second forecasting product was developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune. This system tracks monsoon progress at the district and sub-district levels.

The rainfall monitoring system currently covers 3,196 blocks and sub-districts across 16 states and one Union Territory. These areas mainly depend on rain-fed agriculture and are highly affected by monsoon changes.

The system provides weekly updates every Wednesday, helping local authorities and farmers stay informed about rainfall conditions.

Role of Weather Technology in Agriculture

The Ministry of Earth Sciences supervises both IMD and NCMRWF. The new AI systems are expected to strengthen weather forecasting and improve disaster preparedness across India.

Modern tools such as Doppler weather radars and Automatic Weather Stations are now playing an important role in weather observation and rainfall tracking. These technologies can monitor storm systems, rainfall movement, and changing weather conditions more accurately.

India Meteorological Department, established in 1875, continues to modernize weather forecasting with the use of Artificial Intelligence and advanced data systems.

Wider Coverage for Rain-Fed Regions

India has more than 750 districts, but the current phase of the micro-level rainfall tracking system focuses mainly on selected rain-fed areas. These regions face higher risks due to uncertain monsoon patterns.

The AI Weather Forecasting IMD initiative is expected to improve agricultural planning, water management, and disaster response in vulnerable regions across the country.
