Australia Japan Warship Deal Overview

The Australia Japan Warship Deal was signed in Tokyo in the presence of Richard Marles and Shinjiro Koizumi. Both leaders highlighted the importance of stronger defence ties as regional security concerns increase.

Under this agreement, Japan will deliver the first three upgraded Mogami-class frigates by 2029. The remaining eight warships will be built in Australia, helping boost its domestic defence industry.

Advanced Mogami-Class Frigates

The warships included in the Australia Japan Warship Deal are upgraded Mogami-class frigates. These are modern stealth vessels designed for multiple roles such as anti-submarine warfare, air defence, and surface combat.

Each frigate has a range of around 10,000 nautical miles and includes a 32-cell vertical launch system. They can carry anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles and operate MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. Around 92 personnel will operate each vessel.

The contract has been awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which will build the first ships in Japan.

Boost to Australia’s Naval Strength

The Australia Japan Warship Deal is part of Australia’s larger plan to expand its naval fleet. The country aims to increase its number of major warships from 11 to 26 over the next decade.

Future ships will be constructed at the Henderson Defence Precinct. This project is expected to create nearly 10,000 jobs and improve local shipbuilding capabilities.

Strategic Importance in Indo-Pacific

The Australia Japan Warship Deal highlights Japan’s shift towards a more active defence role beyond its traditional pacifist policy. It also shows Australia’s efforts to strengthen its maritime security amid growing Chinese naval presence.

Both nations are key members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, along with India and the United States. This agreement will enhance joint military cooperation, naval training, and regional stability.
