Deepti Gaur Mukerjee has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. As Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Deepti Gaur Mukerjee will hold the department’s top administrative position.

Mukerjee’s Administrative Background

Deepti Gaur Mukerjee belongs to the 1993 batch of the IAS and is from the Madhya Pradesh cadre.

Before taking charge of the Higher Education Secretary position, she served as Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, a position she held from August 2024.

Her experience in the Central Government includes working on important administrative responsibilities across different departments. Her new assignment moves her into an area that directly affects India’s universities, colleges and higher education institutions.

Changes in the Higher Education Department

Mukerjee’s appointment follows a series of administrative changes at the senior level.

Vineet Joshi was moved to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in July 2026. Mukerjee subsequently took over the Higher Education Secretary position.

An earlier order dated 23 July 2026 had named Rajasthan-cadre IAS officer Naresh Pal Gangwar for the position. That order was later modified as part of the subsequent administrative changes.

Such reshuffles are part of the regular functioning of the Union Government, where senior officers may be moved between ministries and departments depending on administrative requirements.

Focus on Higher Education and Skills

The Department of Higher Education operates at a time when India’s education sector is going through several changes.

Pallavi Jain Govil was appointed Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, was appointed Secretary in the Department of Youth Affairs.
