Forest University Gorakhpur Puts Eastern UP on India’s Education Map
Forest University Gorakhpur is set to become a landmark project for India as Uttar Pradesh moves ahead with plans to establish the country’s first university fully dedicated to forest and environmental studies. This step marks a fresh chapter in higher education, moving away from the idea that major institutions must always be located in metro cities. Instead, Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh has been chosen as the home of this historic university, bringing national attention to the region.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The upcoming university is expected to play a key role in shaping future experts in forestry, wildlife care, and environmental protection. At a time when climate concerns, forest conservation, and biodiversity protection are gaining global importance, this institution aims to create skilled professionals who understand nature from the ground up.
Why Gorakhpur Was Chosen
Forest University Gorakhpur will be built on a large 125-acre campus in Gorakhpur. The location is close to the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, an area already linked with wildlife protection and ecological work. This setting offers a natural advantage for hands-on learning and real-world research.
Officials involved in the project say that choosing Gorakhpur reflects a balanced development approach. Instead of concentrating all advanced institutions in big cities, the government wants to strengthen educational hubs in emerging regions. This move is also expected to boost the local economy and create new opportunities for students in eastern Uttar Pradesh and nearby states.
The land approval process for the campus has already been completed, and the project has moved into the implementation phase after receiving necessary administrative clearances.
Forest University Gorakhpur Focused Only on Nature
What makes Forest University Gorakhpur truly special is its clear and focused academic vision. Unlike general universities that offer a wide mix of subjects, this institution will concentrate only on forest-related and environmental studies.
Courses and research areas are planned around forestry, agroforestry, social forestry, horticulture, wildlife studies, ecology, climate change, and environmental sustainability. The learning model will give strong importance to fieldwork, outdoor studies, and practical training. Students will spend significant time in forests, conservation zones, and natural habitats instead of remaining limited to classrooms.
The goal is to produce graduates who understand forests not just through books, but through direct experience with ecosystems, wildlife, and local communities connected to forest life.
Government Support and Planning
The idea of Forest University Gorakhpur was announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who described it as an important step toward building a strong base of professionals in forest management and conservation. The state government has shown clear support for the project by setting aside ₹50 crore in the 2024 budget for initial work.
At present, the draft law needed to formally establish the university is under final review. Once it is approved, a detailed project plan will be prepared. This will open the way for tenders and the start of construction work on the campus.
Campus Facilities and Student Life

Forest University Gorakhpur is planned as a fully residential campus. It will have hostels to accommodate around 500 students, with separate living spaces for male and female students. The campus design includes modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, an auditorium, sports facilities, and housing for faculty members.
These facilities aim to create a complete learning environment where students, teachers, and researchers can live and work together. The university is expected to attract learners not only from different parts of India but also from other countries interested in forest studies and conservation.
A National Centre for Conservation Learning
Once operational, Forest University Gorakhpur is likely to emerge as a national centre for forest education and biodiversity research. It will support long-term conservation goals and help strengthen India’s efforts in protecting forests and managing natural resources responsibly.
Beyond education, the university is expected to raise awareness about sustainable living and environmental care. For Gorakhpur and Uttar Pradesh, it represents pride, progress, and a strong step toward a greener future.
