India Cocoa Self Sufficiency 2040 Plan Gains Momentum

India Cocoa Self Sufficiency 2040 aims to boost cocoa production, cut imports, and make India a global cocoa hub.

India has set an ambitious goal to achieve self-sufficiency in cocoa production by 2040. This plan is part of a larger vision linked to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. National Mission for India Cocoa Self Sufficiency 2040

In the early phase from 2026 to 2028, the government plans to launch a National Mission on Cocoa. This stage will focus on building a strong base for the sector. A Centre of Excellence will be set up to support research and innovation. Around 250 hectares of polyclonal seed gardens will also be developed in major cocoa-growing areas to improve quality planting material.

Farmer Support Under India Cocoa Self Sufficiency 2040

From 2028 to 2030, the focus will move to farmers. Nearly one lakh farmers will receive training to improve cocoa farming skills. Regional hubs linked to the Centre of Excellence will be created for better support. The plan also includes distributing about 25 million seedlings to farmers.

To improve transparency, a digital farmer registry and traceability system will be introduced. This will help track cocoa production from farms to markets, making the supply chain more efficient and reliable.

Expanding Production and Processing Capacity

Between 2030 and 2035, India aims to expand cocoa farming to one lakh hectares. During this phase, efforts will be made to improve productivity and yield. Research and development will play a key role in this growth.

At the same time, the government will promote cocoa processing infrastructure. The goal is to meet at least 50 percent of domestic demand through local production. Cocoa, an important raw material for chocolate, is in high demand, making this step crucial.

Towards Self-Reliance and Global Presence

In the final phase from 2035 to 2040, India aims to become fully self-sufficient in cocoa production. The country also plans to emerge as a global processing hub. This will help increase farmer incomes and strengthen the overall agricultural economy.

With domestic consumption expected to grow at a steady rate of 5.5 percent and reach 4.67 lakh tonnes by 2040, the India Cocoa Self Sufficiency 2040 roadmap presents a major opportunity. It supports sustainable agriculture, boosts rural livelihoods, and positions India as a strong player in the global cocoa market.
