INS Dunagiri is the fifth stealth frigate under the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A). It is designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited in Kolkata. The ship carries forward the legacy of the earlier INS Dunagiri, combining tradition with modern naval technology.
Design and Propulsion System
The INS Dunagiri Nilgiri Frigate is equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system. This allows the ship to use diesel engines for efficient cruising and gas turbines for high-speed operations. It also features controllable pitch propellers and an advanced Integrated Platform Management System, which improves performance and automation.

Advanced Weapon Systems
The frigate is armed with powerful and modern weapons. It includes BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, the MF-STAR radar, and the MRSAM for air defence. It also has a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount, close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine weapons like rockets and torpedoes. These features allow it to operate in air, surface, and underwater combat.
Strategic Importance for Indian Navy
The addition of INS Dunagiri improves the blue-water capabilities of the Indian Navy. It plays an important role in protecting sea routes, monitoring maritime activities, and supporting security in the Indian Ocean Region. The ship also reflects India’s push towards self-reliance in defence and advanced shipbuilding.
