INS Shachi NGOPV Launch and Shipbuilding Strategy
The NGOPV programme includes building eleven advanced vessels at two major shipyards Goa Shipyard Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata. This parallel construction will help deliver ships faster and boost India’s shipbuilding capacity under the Make in India initiative.

Capabilities and Operational Roles
The NGOPVs are designed for multiple roles such as maritime defence, coastal surveillance, and search and rescue missions. They will also protect offshore assets, support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, and take part in anti-piracy missions. These ships will strengthen the overall fleet of the Indian Navy and improve maritime security.
Symbolism and Indigenous Vision
The name ‘Shachi’ comes from Indian mythology and represents support and strength. The NGOPV crest features the Ursa Major constellation along with a lighthouse, symbolising guidance and vigilance. The project reflects India’s focus on self-reliance through the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, promoting domestic defence production and advanced technology.
