Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma called the move historic. The ordinance allows wider use of Khasi and Garo in government work. However, English will continue as the main link language for official communication across districts and departments.
Governance Changes After Khasi Garo Official Status
With Khasi Garo Official Status, government notifications and orders can now be issued in all three languages English, Khasi, and Garo. This will make governance more accessible, especially for people who are more comfortable in their native languages.
The state may also amend the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuation of the English Language) Act, 1980 to allow lawmakers to speak in Khasi and Garo in the assembly, along with English.

Impact on Education and Exams
The Khasi Garo Official Status is expected to influence education and recruitment. Competitive exams in Meghalaya may soon be conducted in Khasi and Garo, apart from English. This will help students from rural and tribal areas participate more easily.
The government plans to introduce these changes gradually, as it needs to build proper systems for translation, staffing, and implementation.
Political and Cultural Importance
The Khasi Garo Official Status is not just about administration. It is also about identity and cultural recognition. Languages play a strong role in Meghalaya’s tribal heritage, and this decision reflects that importance.
The move also supports the state’s demand to include Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. By strengthening their role at the state level, Meghalaya is sending a clear message for national recognition.
