Nagauri Ashwagandha Gets GI Tag, Bringing New Pride to Rajasthan
Nagauri Ashwagandha has received a major boost after the Centre officially granted it the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition gives the medicinal crop from Nagaur district in Rajasthan a unique identity on the global stage. For farmers across the Marwar region, this moment is being seen as historic. It also marks Rajasthan’s second big success in the agricultural category, after the famous Sojat Mehendi.

The decision is expected to bring long-term benefits to local farmers, traders, and the wider medicinal plant industry.
Nagauri Ashwagandha Puts Nagaur on the Global Map
With the GI tag, Nagaur district is now officially recognised as a trusted source of high-quality Ashwagandha. This medicinal plant has been grown in the region for generations, and the new status helps protect its identity from imitation.
Experts say the tag will stop other regions from using the name “Nagauri Ashwagandha” unfairly. This protection is especially important in global markets, where demand for herbal and Ayurvedic products is rising fast. As a result, farmers can expect better prices and more stable demand for their produce.
Why Nagaur’s Land Makes Ashwagandha Special

Nagauri Ashwagandha stands apart because of the natural conditions in which it is grown. Nagaur’s dry weather and sandy soil create the perfect environment for this crop. These conditions help the plant develop strong roots and rich medicinal value.
Compared to Ashwagandha grown in other areas, the Nagauri variety is known for its longer and thicker roots. These roots contain a higher amount of useful natural compounds. The berries of the plant are also easily recognised by their deep and bright red colour, which is often linked with superior quality. These natural advantages played a key role in earning the GI tag.
New Hope for Farmers and Medicinal Crop Growers
For farmers, the GI tag is more than a label—it is a promise of a better future. Dr Vikas Pawadiya from Nagaur Agriculture College described the recognition as final approval of the crop’s purity and value. With legal backing, the chances of fake or mixed products entering the market will reduce.
The new status is also expected to cut down the role of middlemen. Farmers may get more direct access to buyers, including Ayurvedic medicine makers and pharmaceutical companies, both in India and abroad. This can lead to better earnings and stronger trust between producers and buyers.
Encouraging Youth and Innovation in Farming
The GI tag is likely to attract young people towards medicinal farming. With higher returns and growing demand, Ashwagandha cultivation can become a sustainable career option. Researchers and agricultural institutions are also expected to take more interest in improving farming methods, processing, and storage linked to Nagauri Ashwagandha.
This shift can help modernise traditional farming while keeping local knowledge alive. Over time, Nagaur could emerge as a leading centre for medicinal plant research and trade.
A Team Effort Behind the Recognition
The success of Nagauri Ashwagandha is the result of collective effort at the grassroots level. The work was led by Parvati Chaudhary of the Nagauri Welfare Society, with support from agricultural experts and state authorities. Their dedication helped document the crop’s unique features and history, which was essential for GI approval.
With this addition, Rajasthan now has 22 GI-certified products. Well-known names like Bikaneri Bhujia, Makrana Marble, and Kota Doria are already part of this list. Nagauri Ashwagandha now proudly joins them, strengthening the state’s reputation for unique and high-quality products.
Across India, Ashwagandha is grown on nearly 5,000 hectares, producing about 1,600 tonnes every year. Nagaur’s strong contribution highlights its growing role in the country’s medicinal crop economy. The GI tag ensures that Nagauri Ashwagandha will continue to grow in value, trust, and global recognition in the years to come.
