A Proud Moment for Puducherry and India
The Puducherry Chang-Crandall Award recognition is a proud moment not only for the doctors but also for Puducherry and the entire country. Both doctors are part of the renowned Aravind Eye Care System, an institution known across the world for providing affordable and high-quality eye treatment.

The Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award was started in 2017 through a generous endowment by David Chang and Victoria Chang. It honours individuals who make exceptional humanitarian contributions in the field of cataract care. The award carries a grant of $100,000. In a heartwarming gesture, both doctors have decided to donate the entire prize amount back to the Aravind Eye Care System to support its non-profit eye care activities.
Their decision reflects their deep commitment to service rather than personal recognition.
Distinguished Careers Dedicated to Vision Care
Dr Haripriya Aravind’s Journey
Dr Haripriya Aravind serves as the Chief of Cataract and Intraocular Lens (IOL) Services. She began her medical journey in paediatric ophthalmology after completing her residency. Over time, she moved into adult cataract and IOL services, where she found her true calling.
Working in a high-volume hospital environment, she has handled thousands of surgeries. Her focus has always been on improving patient outcomes while maintaining efficiency. She has helped develop systems that allow hospitals to treat a large number of patients daily without reducing the quality of care.
Her work is especially important in a country like India, where many elderly people suffer from untreated cataracts due to lack of awareness or financial problems.
Dr R Venkatesh’s Contribution
Dr R Venkatesh, the Chief Medical Officer, completed his residency in 1997 and joined the general cataract unit. Over the years, he gained vast experience in outreach surgeries, especially in manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). This technique is widely used in developing countries because it is cost-effective and produces excellent results.
When Aravind established its Puducherry facility in 2003, Dr Venkatesh played a key role in expanding services in the region. He also completed a one-year glaucoma fellowship in Madurai before relocating.
For more than two decades, he has worked tirelessly in outreach programmes, bringing eye care services to villages and underserved communities. His dedication has restored vision to countless people who otherwise might have lived in darkness.
Puducherry Chang-Crandall Award and the Fight Against Cataract Blindness
Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide. It mainly affects elderly people, but the good news is that it can be treated through a simple surgery. However, in many low- and middle-income countries, people do not get timely treatment because of cost, lack of hospitals, or shortage of trained doctors.
The work of the Aravind Eye Care System has become a model for the world. It follows a unique system where paying patients support free or low-cost treatment for poor patients. This cross-subsidy model ensures that no one is denied treatment due to money.
By receiving the Puducherry Chang-Crandall Award, these doctors have highlighted how India is leading the world in affordable medical innovation. At a time when healthcare costs are rising globally, such models offer hope and inspiration.
A Model of Affordable and Large-Scale Eye Care
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Aravind system is its ability to perform high-volume surgeries without compromising quality. Their hospitals are designed to reduce waiting time, increase efficiency, and maintain strict standards.
Manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), which Dr Venkatesh has mastered, is an example of innovation suited for countries like India. It costs less than advanced laser surgeries but delivers equally good results when performed by skilled surgeons.
In 2026, conversations around universal healthcare and accessible medical services are growing worldwide. Many countries are looking at India’s low-cost medical systems as examples. The Puducherry Chang-Crandall Award recognition adds strength to India’s position in global healthcare discussions.
Donation of Prize Money for Social Good
The award includes a grant of $100,000. Instead of using it for personal benefit, Dr Haripriya Aravind and Dr R Venkatesh have decided to donate the full amount to the Aravind Eye Care System.

This money will be used to expand outreach programmes, train young doctors, and improve facilities for patients who cannot afford treatment. It may also support new technologies and digital systems that help track patient care more effectively.
In today’s world, where medical advancements often come with high prices, such acts of generosity remind us that healthcare is ultimately about service and compassion.
Global Recognition and International Platform
The award ceremony at the ASCRS Foundation conference in Washington DC will bring international attention to Puducherry. Doctors and experts from around the world will gather to discuss new technologies, surgical techniques, and ways to reduce blindness globally.
By honouring Indian doctors, the Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award also highlights the strong collaboration between countries in improving healthcare systems.
In recent years, India has gained recognition for its role in vaccine production, digital health services, and affordable medical treatments. Now, through the Puducherry Chang-Crandall Award, India’s contribution to eye care is being celebrated on a global stage.
Strengthening India’s Healthcare Image in 2026
Healthcare has become a major global topic in 2026. Governments and organisations are focusing on preventive care, affordable treatment, and digital health solutions. In this environment, the success of Aravind Eye Care System stands as an example of how innovation and compassion can work together.
The recognition of Dr Haripriya Aravind and Dr R Venkatesh shows that world-class healthcare does not always require expensive equipment or complex systems. Sometimes, it requires dedication, smart planning, and a commitment to serve the needy.
Puducherry, often known for its cultural beauty and tourism, is now also being recognised as a centre of medical excellence.
