Under the new system, the legal age to buy tobacco will increase every year. Instead of a fixed age like 18, younger generations will never be allowed to purchase cigarettes. This gradual method aims to completely phase out smoking over time.

Why the Government Introduced the Law
Smoking is one of the biggest causes of preventable deaths in the UK. In England alone, it causes about 64,000 deaths each year and leads to nearly 400,000 hospital admissions. It also puts a heavy burden on the National Health Service, costing around £3 billion annually. The total economic cost is estimated at more than £20 billion.
New Rules for Public Smoking and Vapes
The law also allows stricter smoking bans in public places. Areas like playgrounds, schools, and hospitals will have tighter restrictions. At the same time, rules on vaping products will become stricter to stop marketing aimed at children and reduce early nicotine addiction.

Smoke-Free Generation UK Law: Debate and Industry Concerns
Health groups such as Action on Smoking and Health and Asthma and Lung UK have supported the law, calling it a major health reform. However, some vape companies worry that strict rules may push people back to smoking or illegal products. The government says its goal is to protect young people while still allowing vaping as a tool to quit smoking.
