Subansiri Lower Project Unit-2 Goes Live, Strengthening Clean Power Supply
Subansiri Lower Project Unit-2 has been officially commissioned, marking another major step forward for India’s clean energy journey. Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal inaugurated the commercial operation of Unit-2, which has a capacity of 250 MW, through a virtual event. This development is part of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest hydropower project in the country, located on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border.

A Significant Moment for Renewable Energy
During the inauguration, the minister described the commissioning as the outcome of years of steady effort by engineers, workers and planners. He said the Subansiri Lower Project reflects India’s strong push towards clean and sustainable power while also supporting development in the North-Eastern states.
According to him, large hydropower projects like this one play a key role in balancing the power system, especially as the country increases its use of solar and wind energy. The project also supports India’s long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions and moving towards a greener future.
Progress So Far and What Comes Next
With Unit-2 now operational, the Subansiri Lower Project has moved closer to full completion. Three more units of 250 MW each are expected to be commissioned in the near future. The remaining four units are planned to come online in phases during 2026–27.
Once all eight units are operational, the project will produce around 7,422 million units of electricity every year. This large volume of clean power will not only meet rising demand but also improve grid stability, especially during peak hours.
A Dam Built for Power and Protection
The Subansiri Lower Project is designed as a run-of-the-river scheme with limited water storage. It features a massive 116-metre-high concrete gravity dam, the largest of its kind in the North-East. The dam plays a dual role—generating electricity and helping manage floods.
As the first dam in a planned series on the Subansiri River, it has a flood cushion of 442 million cubic metres. During heavy rainfall and floods, a significant portion of the reservoir is kept empty to absorb excess water. This helps reduce flood risks for downstream areas in Assam, offering added safety to nearby communities.
Boost to the North-East and Beyond
The project is expected to bring long-term benefits to the North-East region. It will supply power to 16 beneficiary states across India, while Arunachal Pradesh and Assam will receive free power as part of the project agreement. Around 1,000 MW of electricity has been reserved specifically for the North-Eastern states, helping meet local demand and support industrial growth.
Reliable power supply is expected to improve livelihoods, attract investment and strengthen infrastructure in the region.
NHPC’s Contribution and Local Impact

NHPC, the company developing the project, highlighted its wider social and economic impact. During peak construction, around 7,000 local people were employed daily, creating significant job opportunities. Beyond power generation, NHPC has invested in riverbank protection, community welfare programmes and skill development initiatives.
The company has also supported local livelihoods and infrastructure through various social responsibility efforts, underlining its focus on sustainable and inclusive development.
Subansiri Lower Project Unit-2: A Step Forward for Clean Energy
The commissioning of Subansiri Lower Project Unit-2 is more than just the launch of another power unit. It represents progress towards a cleaner energy mix, stronger flood management and balanced regional growth. As more units come online, the project is set to become a cornerstone of India’s hydropower capacity and a key contributor to the nation’s green energy future.
