Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme: Boosting Farmers’ Income and Agricultural Growth
Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme is set to transform the lives of farmers in the state as Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the direct procurement of ginger and dry broomsticks from cultivators starting February 2. This move, under the flagship Bana Kaih handholding initiative, aims to strengthen farm-led growth, provide assured income to farmers, and reduce dependence on middlemen.

The Bana Kaih Scheme is designed to provide price support and guaranteed market access for farmers growing ginger, dry broomsticks, and other selected crops. Under the initiative, the state government will procure these commodities at notified support prices, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their produce. This system reduces uncertainty and stabilises agricultural incomes, encouraging more cultivators to engage in commercial farming.
Launched in September 2024, the scheme currently covers a range of crops including ginger, turmeric, chilli, broomsticks, and unhusked rice. By eliminating intermediaries, farmers can directly sell their produce to the government, which promises to purchase at predetermined rates. This model strengthens the trust between farmers and the government while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Mizoram Emerges as the Ginger Capital of India
The announcement of the Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme coincides with the state gaining recognition as the ginger capital of India, as confirmed by NITI Aayog. Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted that although Mizoram is primarily an agrarian state, it had not previously gained national recognition for any particular crop. Today, ginger cultivation has not only become a symbol of the state’s agricultural success but also a significant source of income for rural communities.
The NITI Aayog recognition underscores the combined efforts of farmers’ hard work and government support, positioning Mizoram as a key player in India’s spice market. The cultivation and sale of ginger now provide livelihoods to thousands of households, supporting both economic growth and rural development.

Economic Benefits of Ginger and Broomstick Procurement
The direct procurement strategy under the Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme has a significant economic impact. Last year alone, the state government spent around Rs 137.72 crore on ginger procurement at support prices. This investment ensured that farmers received fair compensation, enabling them to improve living standards and increase purchasing power.
In addition to ginger, 48,602.29 quintals of dried broomsticks worth nearly Rs 2 crore were procured, along with 1,473 quintals of unhusked rice valued at about Rs 44.18 lakh. These figures illustrate the scale and effectiveness of government intervention in stabilising farmer incomes and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Moreover, the state has opened a new ginger processing unit at Sairang, about 21 kilometres from Aizawl. This facility is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, add value to the crop, and further boost income for farmers. Processing units also create local employment opportunities and help in expanding market reach beyond state borders.
Encouraging Crop Diversification and Rural Economy
Beyond ginger and broomsticks, Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of crop diversification to strengthen the rural economy. One of the promising crops highlighted is sapthei fruit, for which the government plans to promote large-scale cultivation. By diversifying crops, farmers can reduce risk from price fluctuations and climate challenges while ensuring multiple streams of income.
The Zoram People’s Movement government has committed to continuing crop diversification efforts alongside the Bana Kaih Scheme, ensuring that farmers have both financial security and access to markets. This holistic approach not only improves economic stability but also fosters agricultural innovation and sustainability in Mizoram.
Strengthening Agricultural Infrastructure
To complement the procurement initiative, the Mizoram government is investing in infrastructure such as ginger processing units. These facilities improve crop quality, reduce wastage, and make local produce more competitive in national and international markets. The government’s focus on both production and processing reflects a long-term vision to make agriculture a sustainable and profitable occupation for Mizoram’s farmers.
Farmers’ Empowerment and Market Assurance
At its core, the Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme represents a step towards empowering farmers. By ensuring direct procurement at fair prices, the government is providing security and stability to those who form the backbone of the state’s economy. Farmers now have more confidence to invest in better cultivation techniques, expand their production, and adopt modern farming practices.
The initiative also reduces exploitation by intermediaries, ensuring that the benefits of cultivation reach the farmers directly. Over time, such policies are expected to increase agricultural productivity, attract younger generations to farming, and strengthen Mizoram’s reputation as a leading producer of ginger and other high-value crops.
Promoting Sustainable Agricultural Practices
The scheme aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable and responsible agriculture in Mizoram. By focusing on select crops, providing price support, and encouraging processing and value addition, the government ensures that farming remains profitable while conserving resources and maintaining soil health.
Farmers engaged in ginger and broomstick cultivation are encouraged to adopt improved agricultural practices, use organic inputs where possible, and optimise post-harvest management. This approach not only enhances yield but also improves product quality, making Mizoram’s produce more competitive in national and global markets.

Future Outlook for Mizoram Farmers
With the Mizoram Govt Ginger & Broomstick Scheme, farmers in the state can look forward to assured income, better market access, and opportunities for growth through crop diversification and value addition. The government’s proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to making agriculture a stable and rewarding sector.
The state’s recognition as the ginger capital of India, combined with structured procurement and processing facilities, positions Mizoram as a model for other states seeking to strengthen farm-led economic growth. By prioritizing farmers’ welfare, promoting sustainable agriculture, and enhancing infrastructure, Mizoram is paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous rural economy.
