New Aadhaar App Launch Introduces Smarter ID Features

New Aadhaar App Launch introduces a secure digital ID with selective data sharing, face authentication, QR checks, and multi-profile support.

New Aadhaar App Launch marks a major step toward secure, convenient, and privacy-focused digital identification in India. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a redesigned Aadhaar smartphone app that allows citizens to carry a fully functional digital Aadhaar without depending on physical cards. The app emphasises privacy, selective data sharing, and better user control aligning with India’s growing digital governance ecosystem.

The free app works as a digital ID wallet, enabling smooth verification at banks, government offices, telecom centres, travel counters, and other service points. It supports up to five Aadhaar profiles on one device, provided they share the same registered mobile number, making it a practical choice for families.

New Aadhaar App Launch: What’s New and How It Works

The newly launched app functions as a compact digital identity toolkit. Unlike traditional Aadhaar photocopies or printed cards, the app ensures that users can display only selected information for verification. For instance, when identity confirmation requires just a name and photo, the user can hide sensitive details such as address or date of birth.

This promotes data minimisation, a crucial element of modern privacy standards. Service providers only see what is required nothing more.

The app introduces several new features that differentiate it from older digital ID tools:

  • A QR-based verification system for instant authentication
  • Selective disclosure to hide unnecessary details
  • Offline access to stored information after initial setup
  • A detailed activity log showing when and where the app was used
  • A more intuitive, simplified interface designed for non-technical users

Wherever Aadhaar verification is required, users can display a scannable QR code or show only specific details on the screen, making identity checks paperless, secure, and faster.

New Aadhaar App Launch: Strengthened Privacy and Security Controls

UIDAI has enhanced the app with multiple layers of security to prevent misuse and protect sensitive identity data.

The first step is mandatory face authentication during onboarding. This ensures that the digital Aadhaar being loaded onto the phone truly belongs to the holder. Face authentication adds a powerful safeguard against impersonation attempts.

Once onboarding is completed, the user must set a six-digit security PIN, which protects profile access. Even if someone gains access to the device, the Aadhaar profile cannot be opened without the PIN.

The app also includes a biometric lock. This feature temporarily restricts the use of Aadhaar biometrics (fingerprint/iris) for any authentication until the user chooses to unlock it manually. It prevents unauthorized biometric-based transactions.

Core privacy features include:

  • Selective data sharing for minimal disclosure
  • Encrypted QR codes that prevent tampering
  • End-to-end encryption of stored profiles
  • Offline mode that prevents excessive data exposure
  • A built-in activity log for complete transparency

The activity log helps users review when their Aadhaar was accessed or shared building trust and enabling self-monitoring.

New Aadhaar App Launch: How to Download and Set It Up

Downloading and setting up the new Aadhaar app is simple and accessible to all smartphone users. It is available on both Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Steps to get started:

  1. Install the official “Aadhaar” app.
  2. Select your preferred language.
  3. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  4. Verify the number using the OTP sent to your registered mobile phone.
  5. Complete the face authentication process.
  6. Set a six-digit security PIN for app access.
  7. Add additional family members’ Aadhaar profiles (up to five), if they use the same registered mobile number.

After setup, users can instantly show their digital Aadhaar, share a QR code, or access stored details even without an internet connection.

New Aadhaar App Launch: Why It Matters for Everyday India

The new app is designed for daily identification needs, especially in scenarios where people previously carried laminated cards or printed Aadhaar copies. Whether it is bank KYC, SIM verification, hotel check-ins, or entry at service centres, the digital Aadhaar offers a clean, secure, and legally valid alternative.

The launch is also part of India’s larger push to simplify governance processes, reduce physical document handling, and strengthen digital identity frameworks. For many citizens, especially those frequently on the move, this app reduces dependency on physical documents that may get lost, damaged, or forgotten.

New Aadhaar App Launch: Comparing It with the mAadhaar App

New Aadhaar App Launch

UIDAI clarified that the new Aadhaar app does not replace mAadhaar. Instead, both serve different purposes:

Use the new Aadhaar app for:

  • Everyday digital ID display
  • Hiding selected fields
  • QR-based fast verification
  • Carrying multiple family profiles

Use mAadhaar for:

  • Downloading e-Aadhaar PDF
  • Ordering Aadhaar PVC cards
  • Generating Virtual IDs (VID)
  • Updating registered email or mobile number
  • Managing Aadhaar account details

Together, the two apps separate day-to-day identity presentation from document management and administrative functions, making Aadhaar usage more organised and user-friendly.

New Aadhaar App Launch: A Step Toward Safer Digital Identity

The updated Aadhaar app demonstrates UIDAI’s commitment to building a secure, citizen-centric identity ecosystem. Its privacy-first approach, multi-layered security, and flexible sharing options reflect global digital identity standards while keeping usability at the core.

With more services across India shifting to Aadhaar-based authentication, the new app ensures that digital identity remains simple, secure, and accessible to all, without compromising on privacy or convenience.
