RBI Holds Repo Rate At 5.25%: Central Bank Signals Steady Growth And Inflation Watch
RBI Holds Repo Rate At 5.25% as the Reserve Bank of India on Thursday decided to keep its key policy rate unchanged in its first monetary policy announcement after the Union Budget 2026. The move reflects the central bank’s confidence in India’s economic growth while staying cautious about inflation risks and global uncertainty.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The decision was taken after a three day meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced that the committee’s decision was unanimous. The central bank also decided to continue with its “neutral” policy stance. This means the RBI is keeping its options open and may either increase or decrease rates in the future depending on how economic conditions change.
Stable Rates Reflect Balanced Approach
By keeping the repo rate unchanged, the RBI has signalled that it sees no immediate need to tighten or ease monetary policy. The repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends short term funds to commercial banks. Changes in this rate directly impact loan interest rates for businesses and consumers.
A steady repo rate provides relief to borrowers as loan EMIs are unlikely to rise in the near term. At the same time, it ensures that inflation remains under control. The central bank’s neutral stance gives it flexibility to respond quickly if inflation rises sharply or if growth slows unexpectedly.
The RBI’s move comes at a time when global economic conditions remain uncertain. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and changes in global financial markets continue to affect emerging economies like India. By maintaining stability in policy rates, the RBI aims to protect the domestic economy from external shocks.
Growth Outlook Remains Positive
The RBI expressed confidence in the strength of the Indian economy. Real GDP growth for the current financial year has been estimated at 7.4%, indicating strong performance despite global challenges. This projection reflects steady domestic demand, healthy investment activity, and improved government spending.
For the next financial year, the central bank has projected growth at 6.9% in the first quarter and 7% in the second quarter. According to the RBI, economic indicators suggest that growth momentum is likely to continue over a longer period.
Sectors such as manufacturing, services, and infrastructure are expected to support this expansion. Strong bank credit growth and improved business sentiment have also contributed to the positive outlook. The RBI noted that rural demand is gradually recovering, while urban consumption remains stable.
The central bank’s assessment shows that India continues to remain one of the fastest growing major economies in the world. However, policymakers remain alert to global risks that could impact exports, capital flows, or currency stability.

Inflation Projections Slightly Increased
While growth remains strong, the RBI has slightly raised its inflation projections. Retail inflation for the current financial year has been revised upward to 2.1%. For the ongoing quarter, inflation is estimated at 3.2%.
For the next financial year, inflation is projected at 4% in the first quarter and 4.2% in the second quarter. Although these numbers are within the RBI’s tolerance band, the upward revision indicates that price pressures have not completely disappeared.
The RBI’s official inflation target stands at 4%, with a tolerance range of plus or minus 2%. This means inflation can move between 2% and 6% without triggering immediate policy action. By keeping rates unchanged, the central bank appears confident that inflation will remain manageable.
Food prices, global commodity rates, and fuel costs continue to influence inflation trends. Any sharp rise in these factors could lead to future policy adjustments. For now, the RBI believes inflation is under control but requires close monitoring.
Consumer Protection And Regulatory Measures
In addition to the policy rate decision, the RBI announced several measures aimed at strengthening consumer protection in the financial system. The central bank plans to introduce a framework to compensate customers up to ₹25,000 for losses arising from small value digital transaction frauds.
This move is expected to boost trust in digital payments and provide relief to customers who fall victim to fraud. With digital transactions increasing rapidly across the country, such measures are seen as timely and necessary.
The RBI also plans to release draft guidelines to prevent mis selling by lenders. The central bank wants to improve transparency in loan products and ensure that customers fully understand the terms and conditions before borrowing.
Further, steps are being taken to regulate loan recovery practices and the conduct of recovery agents. Complaints related to harassment by recovery agents have increased in recent years. By tightening oversight, the RBI aims to ensure fair treatment of borrowers and maintain discipline within the financial system.

RBI Holds Repo Rate At 5.25% And Maintains Watchful Stance
The decision to keep the repo rate steady reflects a careful balance between supporting growth and controlling inflation. By maintaining a neutral stance, the RBI has left room for flexibility in future policy moves.
As global and domestic conditions evolve, the central bank will continue to assess economic data before taking further action. For now, stable interest rates, steady growth projections, and controlled inflation suggest that the Indian economy remains on a strong path, even as policymakers remain alert to emerging risks.
