India Hypersonic Missile Test Boosts Maritime Defence

India Hypersonic Missile Test strengthens maritime defence with Mach 10 speed and 1,500 km strike range.

India Hypersonic Missile Test marks a major achievement in the country’s defence technology. India successfully carried out the second flight test of its long-range hypersonic anti-ship missile (LR-AShM) off the Odisha coast. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile is designed to improve India’s strike capability in deep ocean regions and strengthen maritime security.

Advanced Speed and Strike Power

The LR-AShM has a strike range of more than 1,500 kilometres and can travel at speeds up to Mach 10. During its glide phase, the missile maintains an average speed of Mach 5, making interception extremely difficult.

The missile uses a two-stage hypersonic glide vehicle system that improves speed, accuracy, and manoeuvrability. Its advanced design allows it to bypass modern radar and air defence systems.

India Hypersonic Missile Test Strengthens Naval Defence

This missile test is an important step in improving India’s maritime deterrence. The weapon can target both moving and stationary naval assets, including large aircraft carriers.

The development is considered significant for India’s strategic preparedness in the Indian Ocean region, especially amid growing naval activities by neighbouring countries such as China and Pakistan.

Advanced Features of the Missile

The missile is equipped with advanced indigenous sensors for accurate targeting during the final attack phase. It can follow unpredictable flight paths, including low-altitude and skipping trajectories, making detection very challenging.

The LR-AShM is powered by a two-stage solid rocket system and supports multiple payload configurations. These features provide greater operational flexibility for future defence missions.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Technology

The missile has been developed by DRDO laboratories under the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad with support from Indian industry partners.

The successful India Hypersonic Missile Test highlights the country’s growing strength in advanced defence innovation and supports the vision of self-reliance in strategic weapon systems.

Key Highlights of the Missile Test

  • Strike range exceeds 1,500 km
  • Maximum speed reaches Mach 10
  • Hypersonic glide vehicle allows mid-flight manoeuvring
  • Designed to target enemy warships and carriers
  • Developed by DRDO with indigenous technology
  • Showcased during the Republic Day Parade 2026
