The recent dialogue in Seoul was co-chaired by P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Park Yoon-joo, First Vice Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea. The discussions covered a wide range of issues, underlining the maturity and depth of India-South Korea ties.
Both sides reviewed progress across defence, security, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The dialogue reflected a shared understanding that regular high-level communication is essential to manage emerging challenges and seize new opportunities. By keeping channels open and active, India and South Korea aim to ensure policy alignment and long-term stability in their bilateral relationship.

Preparing for Key Engagements in 2026
An important outcome of the dialogue was the agreement to pursue a series of high-level visits and joint commission meetings in 2026. These planned engagements are expected to inject fresh energy into bilateral cooperation under the Special Strategic Partnership framework, which was established in 2015.
Such visits are more than symbolic. They provide platforms to take stock of achievements, resolve pending issues, and set new goals. As both countries navigate global uncertainty, these structured interactions help maintain continuity and trust, ensuring that India-South Korea ties continue to move forward with clarity and purpose.
Expanding Economic Cooperation and Trade Links
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting the strong commercial foundation of India-South Korea ties. India highlighted expanding opportunities for Korean companies in sectors such as shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure. With India investing heavily in ports, logistics, and coastal development, Korean expertise and technology are seen as valuable assets.
Both sides also emphasised the importance of economic security and resilient supply chains. Recent global disruptions have shown the risks of over-dependence on limited sources. In this context, India and South Korea agreed to explore ways to strengthen industrial competitiveness and ensure stable access to critical inputs for key industries.
Focus on Technology and Future Industries
Emerging technologies were identified as priority areas for future collaboration. Artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and green hydrogen stood out as sectors with strong potential to shape long-term growth. Cooperation in semiconductors is especially important, as these components are essential for electronics, defence systems, and modern infrastructure.
Green hydrogen was also highlighted as a promising area of partnership. As both countries pursue cleaner energy pathways and net-zero targets, joint efforts in research, production, and deployment of green hydrogen can support sustainable development. These initiatives are expected to strengthen innovation ecosystems and create new opportunities for businesses and skilled workers in both countries.
Working Together on Regional and Global Security
India-South Korea ties extend beyond economics into the realm of regional and global security. During the dialogue, both sides exchanged views on developments on the Korean Peninsula and the evolving dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region. They shared a common interest in maintaining peace, stability, and a rules-based order.
The Indo-Pacific holds strategic importance for both countries, shaping their foreign policy priorities. Through dialogue and coordination, India and South Korea aim to contribute to regional stability while respecting international law and freedom of navigation. This shared outlook adds a strong strategic dimension to their partnership.
Stronger Voice in Multilateral Forums
Another key aspect of the discussions was coordination in multilateral forums. Both countries underlined the need for closer cooperation on global governance reforms and sustainable development. By aligning their positions, India and South Korea can amplify their voices on international platforms and contribute more effectively to global problem-solving.
This multilateral cooperation reflects shared democratic values and a commitment to inclusive growth. It also supports their broader goal of shaping a fairer and more representative international system.

Broader Diplomatic Outreach During the Visit
On the sidelines of the dialogue, P. Kumaran met Cho Hyun, South Korea’s Foreign Minister, and reiterated the shared resolve to elevate bilateral relations. He also held discussions with senior officials from the National Security Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These interactions formed part of ongoing high-level engagements aimed at sustaining the upward trajectory of India–Republic of Korea relations. Together, they highlighted the seriousness with which both sides approach their partnership and their readiness to invest political capital in its future.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
As India and South Korea move forward, their renewed commitment signals confidence in the strength of their partnership. By focusing on diplomacy, economic growth, technology, and security, India-South Korea ties are well-positioned to adapt to global changes and deliver mutual benefits. The momentum generated in Seoul sets a positive tone for the years ahead, especially as both countries prepare for important engagements in 2026.
